Sawyer's character was originally intended to be an older, slick, dress-wearing city street artist from Buffalo, NY. However, when Josh Holloway forgot a line in his audition and then kicked a chair in frustration and swore loudly, the writers liked the edge he brought to the Sawyer character, and decided to write Sawyer as a more Southern, dark drifter instead.

However, when Koreans get married, the wife never takes her husband's family name

Jin and Sun are married and "Kwon" becomes a major plot point in the final season. Even in Korea, it's not allowed to marry someone of the same lineage except in very rare cases.
